Have you heard of the LJ content strike? Here's some info about it, in case you hadn't heard. From that page:

LJ Content Strike, Friday March 21 2008

The one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users and the concept of adfree space.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.
I would love to know everyone's opinion on this, and whether or not you plan to participate. If it pleases you, of course. Thanks!

I'll be traveling on Friday so I probably won't be on line. Doesn't exactly count as participating though the end result is the same!

I don't know.

I think getting rid of the basic accounts is a little stupid, since that's how a lot of people start. I mean, you don't want to shell out $$ when you don't know how much you'll use the service.

And I don't quite understand the "panic" when they wordlessly dropped the option for new accounts. Yeah, it was a little stupid, I guess, but -- well, I wouldn't have known if they *had* said something. I didn't know about it until this "strike" came up.

So really, to me, whatever, I'm not going to think on it.

Hm, this is really close to that political post issue that made me vow never to comment on political posts again...

You're so diplomatic. :-)

Is that euphemism for "evasive"?

I clicked the link (and the link within the link), but I'm still not sure what the "strike" is actually protesting. I saw lj user = freecookiesnow last night, and she said that all accounts will now have advertising. Is that what this is about? Is that what "eliminating basic accounts" translates into (because I have one)?

Mar. 19th, 2008 10:22 pm (UTC)
Existing basic accounts won't be affected. Unless I have it wrong.
Mar. 19th, 2008 10:36 pm (UTC)
Joanarkham has it right. It's just for new accounts. And paid accounts won't have ads, just the free ones (currently "Plus" accounts).
Mar. 19th, 2008 10:45 pm (UTC)
I see nothing in the FAQs that say or even suggest that paid members will have advertising. Basic accounts have evolved into "Plus" accounts, which have the advertising but are still free to use.

Unless I have something wrong, all (new) free accounts will now have ads. Because LJ is a business, not a charity. I don't have a problem with that.

You watch free TV...you get ads. Hell, you pay for a newspaper and get ads. Magazines are like 25% ads.

I'm not sure where people think LJ is going to get money for all that lovely server space if they aren't paying into the system and don't want ads.

Old-fashioned VHF and UHF channels are still broadcasting in all major metropolitan areas free of charge.

You can't get broadcast TV free where you live?
Mar. 19th, 2008 10:53 pm (UTC)
Yeah, ok, so now I get it. Thanks Joanarkham! (and I agree)

So to answer your question EWR, No I will not participate because I'm a soul sucking capitalist, bent on destroying the earth for a profit.

Ew. Ew. Ew. Thanks for pointing that out. I think it's time for a new blog title, after all this time.

Mar. 20th, 2008 02:59 pm (UTC)
Yeah, actually I took a few pics for you of EWR airport from my old, crappy SpoonCup camera phone. They didn't turn out, so I didn't bother sending them on.
Mar. 20th, 2008 03:36 pm (UTC)
I'm hoping to go to Orly in France and take pics for rackletang.

If they make me pay then I quit. They can ads so long as I can still find my friends page.
It's nice to see what some of my friends are up to but it's certainly not a daily requirement.
Mar. 20th, 2008 01:54 pm (UTC)
I have the free-with-ads kind and it's no more intrusive than the banner ads on most of the other websites I visit. WAY LESS intrusive than on Yahoo!

To answer EWR: I plan to be sarcastic about the strike.

Also, they have planned the strike for Good Friday and Purim. I don't think any drop in numbers will even be useful information!
Mar. 20th, 2008 03:32 pm (UTC)
That is a good point; weekends tend to be quiet on my Friends page anyway, especially long weekends.

My feelings? This is a protest for angsty teens looking for a cause.

I'm more troubled by the fact that you need to get an account to be able to read my brilliance. Because it's no fun pontificating to an empty room. But all of the blog sites seem to run that way.

As for ads? Bah. My local gas station has flat screen TVs on the pumps that spew out bad commercials 24/7/365. Advertising is just the evil background noise of our time.

They are eliminating public entries? Or anonymous commenting? All the other blog sites I know of let outsiders read, just not necessarily comment.
Mar. 20th, 2008 03:48 pm (UTC)
Yes, and many of the public sites do let non-members comment, as long as they provide an email address. And I think everyone online these days has at least one throwaway email address.

I've been scarce around these parts, due to overwhelming work responsibilities. But I think I'll blog EXTRA tomorrow, to help make up the difference.
Mar. 20th, 2008 08:59 pm (UTC)
hee! I will blog with you. At least in the morning... I'm hoping to skive out of here at lunch.
